Our Surgeons

All of our doctors are members of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, the North Carolina Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, the North Carolina Dental Society, the Durham-Orange County Dental Society, the American Dental Association and numerous other professional organizations and study groups.

Dr. Kendell

Barry D. Kendell, DMD, MS is a 1972 graduate of the University of Manitoba Dental School in Canada and in 1980 completed his masters degree and residency training in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Dr. Kendell is a part-time clinical Adjunct Associate Professor at the UNC School of Dentistry, a certified instructor in CPR and has been an examiner for the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. He has been active with Health Volunteers Overseas, traveling to Guyana and Argentina to lecture and provide surgical instruction.

David E. Frost, DDS, MS obtained his BS from Texas A&M, his DDS from Baylor College of Dentistry and completed his General Practice Residency in the Air Force. Dr. Frost completed his Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Residency at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1980. He continued his training with a fellowship at UNC Chapel Hill and at Canniesburn Hospital, Scotland, in 1981. Dr. Frost has served as an examiner, director and President of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. He is currently Vice Chair of the Board of Directors of the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Foundation and Chair of the Board of Directors of Health Volunteers Overseas. He serves the specialty on numerous committees and organizations nationally and internationally. He has volunteered with surgical groups in Nepal, India, Chile, Peru, Cuba and Vietnam. Dr. Frost is an Adjunct Associate Professor for the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at UNC Chapel Hill and is the National Civilian Consultant to the Surgeon General for Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery for the United States Air Force. He has a clinical interest in orthognathic surgery.

Dr. Bechtold

William Bechtold, DDS, MS is a graduate of the St. Louis University School of Dentistry and received his certificate and residency training in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Interfaith Medical Center in New York City. Dr. Bechtold received his postgraduate training and master's degree in Maxillofacial Radiology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is a lecturer at the UNC School of Dentistry in radiology and provides radiological consultative services throughout the Triangle area. He is a member of Health Volunteers Overseas and has volunteered with surgical groups in China and Argentina.

Debra M. Sacco, DMD, MD is a graduate of the University of Connecticut School of Dental Medicine and the University of North Carolina School of Medicine. She completed her residency in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and a one year internship in general surgery at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Her clinical interests encompass orthognathic surgery, dental implants, bone graft reconstruction and distraction osteogenesis for implant therapy. Currently, Dr. Sacco is an examiner for the American Board of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery. She lectures at UNC School of Dentistry in their physical diagnosis course.

Dr. Vandersea

Brian Vandersea, DDS obtained his BS from Davidson College in 1995 and his DDS from the University of North Carolina School of Dentistry in 2001. After completing an internship in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth, TX, in 2002, Dr. Vandersea completed his residency training in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2006. He is an Adjunct Associate Professor in the Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery at UNC Chapel Hill and joins our practice with a special clinical interest in orthognathic surgery.

Andrew T. Ruvo, DMD, MD received his undergraduate degree from Penn State and his dental degree from the University of Medicine & Dentistry of New Jersey. He completed his residency training in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of North Carolina. While in residency, Dr. Ruvo earned his medical degree from The University of North Carolina School of Medicine and completed a one year General Surgery internship. He has a broad base of clinical interests including orthognathic surgery and dental implants.
